Early 1985, David Westlake was 19, living in Hayes, Middlesex, England. Into Lennon/McCartney, Dusty Springfield & Doug Yule-era Velvet Underground, he advertised in the NME for musicians to join him playing his songs. Westlake took the band-name from Joseph Losey's film The Servant. First gig was opening for the Television Personalities at the Pindar of Wakefield (now the Water Rats) in London's King's Cross on 1 July 1985.

Luke Haines joined The Servants in December 1986, after answering Westlake's music press ad. "The Word Around Town", the song on the Creation compilation, is credited to David Westlake - not The Servants - because members of The Triffids play on it. Other artists on the compilation include: Nikki Sudden & the Jacobites, and Phil Wilson of the June Brides.

RE-ISSUED 1993 on CD: Creation CRECD 019
Creation Records invited Westlake to make a six-song mini-album in 1987. It was issued as a David Westlake record, and not as The Servants, because The Triffids' rhythm section - Martyn Casey (bass) and Alsy MacDonald (drums) - play on it. Westlake wanted to name the record after the opening track, "The Word Around Town". Creation got used to calling the record "Westlake". Release was delayed for six months, by which time The Servants were touring the UK. Haines calls the record "a minor classic" in the sleevenotes to The Servants' Reserved compilation: "it cuts against the grain of the paisley psychedeliasts and inept Byrds tribute acts clogging up the Creation roster."

LABEL/NUMBER Glass 056/Glass 1205
Luke Haines was in The Servants from December 1986 to August 1991. Drummer Hugh Whitaker left chart-band The Housemartins and was in The Servants from June 1987 to August 1989. The Servants did not fit in at Creation Records, and were dropped. Glass Records invited the band to record an album. The day the band went into the studio a call arrived explaining that Glass was running out of money - better make it a single instead. Glass took more than a year to release "It's My Turn".

The Servants signed with Fire Records in 1990. Luke Haines says of Disinterest in the sleeve-notes to the Reserved compilation: "It is Art Rock. Ten years too late and fifteen years too early." MOJO included Disinterest in its list of the greatest British indie records of all time in the magazine's December 2011 Indie special (page 123).

A-SIDE RECORDING INFORMATION as on Disinterest
B-SIDE RECORDED BY Martin Schori, live in Biel, Switzerland, 4 May 1989
RELEASED August 1990
LABEL/NUMBER Paperhouse PAPER004
Single from Disinterest. The b-side features two live recordings: the otherwise-unrecorded "Bad Habits Die Hard", and "It's My Turn". The message etched into the b-side's run-out groove referenced The Servants' unstable record-label situation: "In case of Fire break Glass". Twelve months later - 21 August 1991 - The Servants played a final show at the Rock Garden in London's Covent Garden. Everyone said good night.

Small Time was recorded in 1991 as the follow-up to 1990's Disinterest. Luke Haines provides sleevenotes. Not released until 2012, Small Time is "the Servants' second and best album . . . a strange and wonderful thing"; the songs on Small Time are "looser, more mysterious, strange and beautiful, transcending their influence and sounding . . . like nothing else". Haines explains Disinterest's long unavailability: it is "stuck in an irretrievable record company quagmire, where it looks set to remain." CD2 of the set - Hey Hey We're The Manqués - features previously unreleased, alternative versions of the songs.
